A few weeks ago my husband came to me with the idea of using sublimation printing to sell some of my designs on mugs and things etc. Even suggested doing custom work. I was at first reluctant and dismissive of the idea as I have tried selling stuff before without much luck (a very long time ago mind you) Husband, was certainly more enthusiastic than I was and sent me an email with various links to videos and equipment as well as ideas for pricing.
So, naturally, I had a look at the videos and links he sent when I next had a chance and it then started to intrigue me.
What is sublimation printing? Sublimation printing is a specific process where an image or design is printed onto special paper, which is then transferred to another surface (normally a polyester or polyester mix) using heat to allow the ink to disintegrate deep into the fabric/material. This process tends to make the print last longer than vinyl printing
I watched a video about a mum starting her sublimation business at home and another about introduction to sublimation and all got me even more intrigued. However, I was still a bit skeptical of this. Especially finding a nice area of items and designs to sell, so many good artists out there to compete with. And there is the cost of the equipment as well. I wanted to use a third party just to test the waters to see if anyone would buy my designs, but again husband told me it would be better if I did it myself. (He is very convincing and supportive) and using our business account we can get the tax back.
And always that nagging imposter syndrome voice at the back of my head. Telling me I am "no good and won't sell and will be a waist of money". But again very supportive husband and some encouragement as well as the benefits of being able to earn a little money and be able to do it around looking after my son ...I have taken the leap and decided to give it all a go. Fed up with being over looked for jobs and self employed work I will be taking a leap into the unknown (que music from Frozen 2)
Equipment arrives soon and coming up with design ideas. I will be documenting my journey on my blog and LinkedIn profile. Let's see how things go...
